WA JV loses in three sets to LL, 

Dallas Varsity defeated WA Varsity, taking three sets by the score of 25-15, 25-15,25-9.  The team was led in service points by Ella Schultz(3), Victoria Krupkevitch(3), Melania Mazzeo(3) and Julia Crane(3).  Julia Crane(11), Hannah Garinger(11), Ashley Songailia(15), Emily Jackson(11), Sierra Smith(6) and Ella Schultz(15) led in digs.  Vanessa Chinikaylo added 3 blocks and 3 assists.

WA JV picked up its first win of the season, defeating Dallas in two sets, 25-16-and 25-21.   The team was led in service points by Abby Hoyt(5), Katie Rowlands(10), Melania Mazzeo(6).  Abby Hoyt(7),Victoria Krupkevitch(5), Madison Ratchford(7), Gabby Vogel(5), Katie Rowlands(5) and Melania Mazzeo(10) led in digs.  Gabby Vogel(2) and Madison Ratchford(2) led in kills.  Abby Hoyt(3) and Melania Mazzeo(4) led the team in aces.

WB Area JV defeated WA JV in two sets winning the match 25-19 and 25-12.  WA was led by Abby Hoyt in service points with 4.  In digs, Abby Hoyt(6), Madison Ratchford(5), Victoria Krupkevitch(12), Abby Decker(5) and Allie Silinskie(5) led the team in digs.  Melania Mazzeo led in kills with 3.

WA JV gets 1st win of the season in the books defeating Hanover Area 25-18 and 25-12.  The team was led in service points by Victoria Krupkevich with 20 and aces 10.  Abby Hoyt added 3 service points along with Janessa Haros(4).  Abby Hoyt also had 6 digs and 3 kills, along with Victoria Krupkevich who recorded 5 digs and 3 assists.  Katie Rowlands had 3 digs and 2 service points.  Allie Silinskie had 2 digs.

THe JV Lady Warriors lost in two sets to Del Valley, losing the match 25-7 and 25-20.  The team was led in digs by Katie Rowlands(9) and Gabby Vogel(8) and Victoria Krupkevich(9).  Kaitlyn Malet(3) led in service points.

The Varsity Lady Warriors lost in three sets to Del Valley, losing the match 25-5, 25-9 and 25-9.  The team was led is aces(4) and service points(3) by Hannah Garinger.  Emily Jackson(11) and Hannah Garinger(10) led the team in digs.

WA lost the match to Pittston Area in three, but did take the 2nd game.  The team was led by Victoria Krupkevich, Gabby Vogel and Melania Mazzeo for service points as well as digs.   Katie Rowlands led the team in assists.

WA lost the match in three sets to PA 25-11, 25-8, 25-9.  WA was led by Hannah Garinger and Leana Lombardo, along with Emily Jackson for service points.  Hannah Garinger led the way in kills with three.  Ella Schultz led with assists.  Freshman Victoria Krupkevich saw action as well.

The Varsity Lady Warriors dropped three sets to the Tunkhannock Tigers, losing their first match of the season September 11th, by the scores of 25-12, 25-13, and 25-12. 

JV drops two sets to Tunkhannock, losing the match 25-16 and 25-19 in the first WA Lady Warrior Volleyball games of the season under first season varsity assistant and JV Coach Solimar Zabala.

Abby Hoyt and Melania Mazzeo have been named team captain's for the 2020 season.

Wyoming Area heads into the girls volleyball season with a new head coach and new players occupying all but one spot in the lineup.

John Bonin takes over as head coach in place of Sarah Fugate, who moved on to become an assistant coach at Marywood University.

Bonin, who got into coaching last season as an assistant to Fugate, played four years, including two as a starter, at Wyoming Valley West in the 1980s.

“It was a great opportunity for me to step in and learn from coach Sarah last year,” Bonin said.

The Lady Warriors went 5-10 in 2019.

“Graduation hit us hard,” Bonin said. “We lost five of the six starters from last year’s varsity team.”

Senior outside hitter Hannah Garinger is the only returning starter.

Bonin does have 33 players with which to work.

Many of the players joining Garinger played for Bonin last season in his dual role as varsity assistant and junior varsity coach. The JV team went 8-7.

Four seniors, who were part of the winning JV team, could wind up in the starting lineup.

Ashley Songaila and setter Vanessa Chinikaylo also saw considerable time in the varsity rotation last season. Opposite hitter Leana Lombardo and Emily Fairchild are the other seniors.

Julia Crane, Emily Jackson and Ella Schultz, juniors who have already been in the program two seasons, are candidates to complete the lineup.

The Lady Warriors open the season Friday at Tunkhannock.

Wyoming Area

Head Coach: John Bonin

2019 Record: 5-10

Team Outlook: Bonin, who takes over the team from Sarah Fugate, was an assistant with the Warriors last season. While Wyoming Area graduated five of six starters, Bonin returns Hannah Garinger and her 129 kills from one year ago. Others expected to grace the starting lineup include seniors Ashley Songaila, Vanessa Chinikaylo and Leana Lombardo.

“We have a strong work ethic at practice, and a great understanding of their roles on the court,” Bonin said. “We are hoping to play as a team, and adjust to every situation on the court to improve play each game.”

The Captain's for the 2020 Varsity Lady Warrior Volleyball program were selected this week.  They are Hannah Garinger, Ashley Songaila and Vanessa Chinikaylo.  

First official practice starts August 27th.  Please note schedule as sent in remind.
